About Us

People working together for an
eco-balanced future

Emerging Ecology is a 501c3 organization founded in 2013 in Greensboro, NC. Nelson Stover (1945-2023), the founding visionary behind the organization, was a local organizer and ecological advocate dedicated to coalescing a worldview that would guide society towards mutually beneficial relationships between people and planet. Through our first 10 years, we put on public art performances, led international development experiences both virtual and physical, conducted community capacity building, and promoted ecological education. This diverse set of programs gravitated around the worldview that Nelson articulated.

As our organization transitions into its second generation, we are re-inventing the way we deliver programs. We remain dedicated to the idea that people working together can work together to create mutually enhancing relationships with animals, plants, and ecosystems. Our work draws on the intellectual foundations of such thinkers as:

  • Thomas Berry, who expressed that the universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects

  • Robert Powell, Sr., who illustrated the ordering principles of the universe with sacred geometry

  • The Ecumenical Institute and the Institute of Cultural Affairs, who refined participatory methods for community development around the world

Emerging Ecology is an Associate

of the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) and of ICA International
